FRIENDS OF THE HUDSON RIVER PARK
FALL 2004 PHOTOGRAPHY PROGRAM EXHIBIT
at chashama Gallery at 217 E.42nd Street

Friends of Hudson River Park's Photo Program is an eight-week course, conducted three times a year, for teenage students interested in photography. The Photo Program culminates with an exhibition of the students' work to share with family, friends and the public. The pictures exhibited at 217 are an accumulation of all sessions to date. Viewings at 217 can be made by appointment or in the course of public events such as readings, shows, etc (see contact information below).

Some of their work can also be viewed in the Fall 2004 Photography Program Exhibit at Pier 40 Lobby (West Houston and Hudson River) through January 31st, 2005. The Pier 40 exhibit is open to public viewing from 7am to 8pm. For more information, please contact Joan Lai at 212-757-0981 ex.204 or Joan [at] fohrp.org.

Alana McNair’s ‘In Spite of Appearance’
Dec 17 at 5pm
Dec 18 and 19 at 2pm

A sound/art installation that explores the relationship between the five senses. Inspired by a kooky and whimsical sound installation, this piece will tell a story in which each sense is personified. This installation will explore the complexity of human personality and its self-conscious limitations. Alana McNair is a theater writer and performer. She is currently developing an original script for theatre, which she co-wrote, Fatal Attraction: A Greek Tragedy. Original work includes Just Piddlin’: a dirt road operetta at the Duplex Cabaret Theatre and Half Asleep in Karen Finley at Collective Unconscious.

In Spite of Appearances is part of chashama's
“NOT FOR SALE” series, A FREE WINDOW PERFORMANCE SERIES at 208 WEST 37TH STREET (Between 7TH AND 8TH Avenues), NOVEMBER 3-DEC 19, 2004

Deconstructed X-mas
a video installation by Darryl Hell

On Dec.14th 2000, Darryl Hell performed this work @ The New Museum, NYC. It was part of an event produced by Christian Marclay entitled, "The Sounds of Christmas." A number of turntablists from various backgrounds were given a day to sift through thousands of X-mas records and practice prior to the event. The only musical rule was, only his collection could be used. For the actual performances, each was given an hour.

This is a 50-minute portion of the performance intercut with additional footage. The video has been remixed but the performance audio is unaltered and live.

"...Darryl Hell countered with a lyrical cacophony of glee, crossing gospel with Elvis, juggling two copies of "O Come All Ye Faithful" until they sounded like a heavy-metal riff." - Sarah Ferguson / The Village Voice

Installation concept – Darryl Hell
video manipulation – Darryl Hell / Wolfgang Busch
camera – Michele Ford
additional footage – Hell Media Archive

Darryl Hell (Abstinence, Emergency Broadcast Network, Operation: Mindwipe, Sektor 6 Kommunikations–s6k.com), a dj since 1972, is the only experimental/industrial turntablist in NYC. He is also a veteran musician, composer and mixed media artist / producer.

chashama offices will be closed from Dec.24, 2004 until Monday, Jan.3, 2005.

Fun-Raiser 111

Partake in the holiday madness!

Where?  Victory Hall, 186 Grand Street
December 18th, 2004
Contact: Bex Goyette at : 917-488-4150
or visit our website at www.111first.org.

3 pm to 8 pm Art and Holiday gift sale with Bizarre Bazaar ring leader, Maggie Ens, and the hard-to-be-Silent auction conceptualized by Miss Kay Kenny, with silly auctioneer, Bex Goyette.

8 pm-on: Big 111 party with live music by 111 Jam Band, American Watercolor Movement, Clueless and DJ¹s Steff and Camille (aka Street Justice and Redd Foxx).

The Bizarre Bazaar holiday gift sale is a shopping spree for small paintings, handmade jewelry, artist-designed clothing, and one-of-a-kind treasures.

Fun for kids will include a holiday world peace free-form collage area and angelic face painting.

The funky furniture auction will feature an amazing selection of artist-made, hand-painted furniture by: Ron English, Norm Francoeur, Kay Kenny, Kelly Darr, Bex Goyette, Maggie Ens, Sandy de Sando, Kathe Frantz, Nancy Wells, Jorge Collazo, Tina Krause, Tchera Niyego, Clara Fialho, Iboo, Jesse Wright and Stephanie Wright.

You will see the following hot items:

The "Pack-Rat N Haul" (dual function crate and bureau) by Bex Goyette and Kelly Darr will tell the whole 111 story in bunny cartoons and psychadelic prisms.

Other furniture works by Bex Goyette include the Fire and Ice Chairs which are at once beautiful art objects and a social commentary on landlords using tricky tactics to get tenants out of their buildings.

Bex Goyette says  "My 111 Baby Chair shows the story of a baby who lived with us at the 111 building for a brief spell after the arson fire happened. Miss Eleanor was a 1 and a half year old beauty from the south of France who stayed here in a very dangerous time with no heat or natural amenities.  She was our number one revolutionary, because all the guards knew she was staying with us and it created extra protection for us."

Local Jersey City artists Jesse and Stephanie Wright are making furniture inspired by the 111 situation that deal with ³reaching and the fire within.²  This collaboration between husband and wife results in a furniture series incorporating collage and painting, their respective media.

People are going to want to bid on these hottie art items, because they are funky, functional and will immortalize the history of the arts as an integral part of Jersey City¹s make-up.  People are going to be very pleased to buy art and gifts at such affordable prices that are basically steals in New York City terms, and actually due to the fact that there are a large number of reputable and famous artists participating in this event we are expecting collectors from NYC and all over the tri-state area.  So it¹s best to come early and place your bids right away.  This auction is going to take a steady eye.

And don¹t forget about the after-party (we will take donations of $5 at the door).

Slide projection and video by Jersey City artists will be shown all night in conjunction with the music.  Included will be memorable moments in 111 history of our eclectic mix of patronage.

The Extended 111 Jam Band will perform their international fusion mix of jazz and spoken word.

American Watercolor Movement, one of the hottest art bands coming out of Jersey City will perform, as well as a great band, Clueless.

D.J.s Steff and Camille (A.K.A. Street Justice and Redd Foxx) will spin their funky blend of old school funk and  dance music to end the night of celebration.

Refreshments will be served throughout the evening.

Purchasing items from this auction and art/gift sale will benefit the 111 First Street/arts district cause.  The money raised will directly go to the 111Arts First non-profit or the legal defense fund for 111 First Tenants who are facing eviction and other threats.  This will help our community cope with these extremely difficult times.
