chashama is starting a New Window
Series
at 266 West 37th St.
chashama is accepting proposals for an ongoing window series "The False Body" at a recently acquired space at 266 West 37th Street just off 8th Avenue. The space, a former lobby, is appropriate for storefront performances, installations, or exhibitions. chashama invites artists from the fields of performance, theatre, dance, visual arts, film, and mixed media to create new works for early summer. We are currently programming for the months of May and June. A key component of the works is that they will be visible to busy street traffic and a diverse audience of day laborers, tourists, and local residents. Preference will be given to projects with an acknowledged public dimension and interaction with the street environment. 266 West 37th is in the heart of the Garment District, on a street lined with storefronts featuring mannequins in various stages of dress and undress. These creepy figures, supposedly human-shaped, inspire dread and disgust. What is scary about a form that looks human, but is not? Could a mannequin have a soul? This window series seeks artworks that comment on and embrace images of the false body in whatever form: puppet, clone, doll, etc. Proposals that stretch the boundaries of these questions are welcome. Decisions will be based on artistic merit, feasibility of the proposed project, and the appropriateness of the project for the space. Please note: chashama will cover all costs associated with occupancy of the space, including rent and utilities; additional funding is not available for this ongoing series at this time.
