chashama is pleased to present Help / Hope / Word / Image, a solo exhibition of recent work by Jeanne Marie Wasilik.

Wasilik's new work continues her investigation of how represented language might be transcribed, read, and received. Her images include type as well as Braille and Morse code. Wasilik's recent drawings have been pastel rubbings that begin with the construction of a reproducible pattern such as a low relief, an incised template, or a stencil; from these matrices she has made rubbings that explore the intersections of the descriptive and the rhetorical. Her new paintings are also process-oriented. She begins by stenciling a text on fabric, then shapes the fabric into a relief that she mounts on a wall, lights, and paints. In many cases the patterns on the fabric in the illusionistically rendered images reference the grids of classical perspective. The paintings play the "content" of text against the "content" of perspective understood as both a descriptive and a rhetorical idiom.

Jeanne Marie Wasilik is a Brooklyn-based artist who has shown regularly in New York, including at Exit Art, the Drawing Center, and Artists Space. She has had solo exhibitions at Queens College, Anthology Film Archives, and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
