chashama is pleased to present "Simple Yet Complex," a solo exhibition of the acclaimed painter, Elaine R. Defibaugh.

"Simple Yet Complex" exhibits Defibaugh's large mixed media, and collage paintings inspired from shadows of trees collected on large canvas, while traveling.  Defibaugh is interested in the ethereal qualities apparent in the shadows once combined with manmade materials.

The application of paint begins with a dialogue between line, shape, texture, movement, color and the artist.  "Sometimes the painting directs me and tells me where to go and what to investigate.  Other times, I'm directed by a thought or personal story, or perhaps even historical or scientific data.  I like to investigate the possibilities of the unknown.  The shadows of the trees in some way have shared their secrets and energy with me." ?Elaine R. Defibaugh

Defibaugh adds various collage materials, such as spandex fabric, mylar, canvas, and conventional fabrics as well.  Quite often, the artist will sew on the canvas to express the bridging together of the drawn line with the collage.

"The exuberance of eyes and limbs, beaks and legs, and motion and cell energy.  I'm thrilled to see the continual shift in your vision. Your work has suddenly jolted into energetic life.  Wow". -- Meredith Hall

You can view past works & bio on the artist's website - www.elainedefibaugh.com

chashama is also pleased to present Focus: The Art of Service, a solo exhibition of the documentary photographer Nancy Konipol.

Focus: The Art of Service exhibits Konipol?s photographs spanning the last five years which chronicle her work and relationships with New York City?s social services community, from the city?s soup kitchens to Holocaust survivors in Brooklyn.

In 2001, Konipol started a nonprofit organization, NYNonProfit.com to combine her two passions - photography and social services.  She photo-documented her work with the hopes of one day exhibiting it and promoting awareness of the issues many New Yorkers face day to day.

Nancy Konipol, born in Brooklyn, is a life-long New Yorker. Konipol was educated at Bard College in Hudson County, NY and the International Center of Photography in New York City.  The subject of this exhibition is close to her heart ? she has received awards for her work with New York City?s nonprofit community. Konipol has exhibited her works in many group exhibitions in New York City including New York on My Mind, women artists celebrating New York City, shown in the Manhattan Borough President?s office.  Works by Nancy Konipol are in the  Miriam and Ira D. Wallach permanent collection of the NYC Public Library, as part of the September 11 Photo Project and in the hardcover book of the same name.  Konipol?s work has also been published in literary journals.

Long Distance consists of three short plays: In Skin care, Amy's little sister went off to college and caught leprosy; in Visitors, Meredith's parents won't ask for directions and don't know a mass murderer when they see one; and in Flush, Lisa's mom will get out of her mammogram even if she has to break the laws of space and time to do it.  These funny and frightening plays ask us: how do you protect a loved one from a chaotic universe?

On the sixth anniversary of that traumatic day, we have made visible the connective tissue between the writings of George Orwell and their future visions, which we currently inhabit. "Newspeak" and "thought crime," are a complete reality in our "media savvy" culture. By intercutting Orwell's 1984 and Animal Farm with 9/11 and "war on terror" footage, we example his vision...and our reality.

The Score
Choreography and installation by Sera-Kim Huenergard
September 27 through 29, 2007
  Performance Schedule:
  Thursday through Saturday:
  Prelude - 12p, 5p & 6:30pm
  Action: 7pm
Schedule subject to change.
FREE and open to the public.

The Score is an exploration of duration and spatial transformation in two parts. The prelude challenges the audience by asking them to momentarily suspend their engagement with the public world and enter an unfamiliar place of action, light, and sound both obscured and obvious. A parting screen slowly introduces them to the second movement; as it opens, lights begin to illuminate the performers while their actions and the accompanying soundtrack grow in intensity. As soon as this momentum begins to get stronger, it disappears into the darkness again. With the us of directed lights, screens, and ambient shadows, the space becomes a mix of the known and enigmatic. The audience is captivated as the performers transport them to a place completely unexpected, hypnotic and far from the outside world from which they came.

Sera-Kim Huenergard has been creating and performing in New York since 2004. Her choreographic work has been shown at WAXworks, chashama's Oasis Festival, One Night Stand, an ongoing series she co-produces with Josselyn Levinson, and programs in Washington, California and Arizona. Sera's sculptural collaborations with Michael Helland and Daniel Linehan have been seen at Dixon Place's Bodyblends series and most recently in The Dress-Up Show at The Chocolate Factory. She is currently dancing with Zvi Gotheiner/Zvi Dance and Jeanette Stoner and Dancers, and has worked with many other wonderful people including Mark Haim, Andrea Haenggi/AMDaT, Josselyn Levinson and Melinda Lee/tothinkthethoughtperformanceprojex. Sera is from the wilderness of Washington State and holds degrees in Dance and Sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle.
