chashama North 2008 Artist Residency Application

Mission:
An artists residency program that fosters a sense of community through shared meals of organic,
local foods.

In its fourth year, chashama North continues to evolve as an opportunity for emerging artists. The
core of the residency program will be the shared meals. There will be a shared mid-day meal every
day, and shared supper Wednesdays and Sundays. The primarily vegetarian meals will focus on
wholesome, organic, sustainable and local foods. Cooking and eating together will foster a sense of
community and encourage a dialogue about contemporary art and life.

In addition to creating a sense of community, the shared meals will become a learning experience for
the artists-in-residence. The kitchen stocked with seasonal produce, whole grains and naturally raised
meats and dairy will encourage new understanding of preparing and eating foods. Meal plans, recipes
and instructions will be provided to teach those with limited skills or experience how to cook with
whole foods.

Facilities:
Each artist will have a private bedroom and semi-private studio. The studios range in size and will be
assigned based on artists' needs. The rooms are sparsely furnished with a futon or mattress. The
studios have at least one worktable and a few clip lamps. There is also a communal garage
workspace (Tools are not provided). There is a computer and wireless network available for email. A
few studios will be connected to the wireless network.
