CALL FOR VISUAL ART WORKS

for

Women's Voices, Women's Vision

an exhibition in conjunction with a concert celebrating the work of
women composers from the Baroque through the present

Musique a la Mode
, a new chamber music organization based in New York
City, is seeking works of visual art by women artists for its upcoming
program, "Women's Voices, Women's Vision," which will take place on
Sunday, April 13th at St. Mark's Church in the Bowery. This
evening-length event seeks to pair the performance of a series of
works by female composers throughout the ages with the work of
contemporary female visual artists. The program will be a celebration
of the substantial contributions of women to the creative arts, which
seeks to foster a dialogue among the disciplines and bring to the
local community an increased awareness of what is and was 'women's
work' in the arts.

The event is structured around a concert performance of works by women
composers from the Baroque to the present, many of whom were
under-recognized in their time due to their gender. The works and
composers span a wide range of techniques, traditions, and cultural
influences. Many of the pieces, formally or informally, discuss the
cultural environment in which these women were and are working. The
event will take place at St. Mark's Church, a large, open space that
long has been home to innovative performing arts programming. We wish
to fill the space with works of art by contemporary female artists,
revealing alternate perspectives on the current world of the female
creative artist. Prior to the concert, during intermission, and
throughout the following reception, the audience will be free to move
through the space and to view the artworks. By placing these musical
and visual works in the same time and space, we hope to further
enhance and invigorate the ideas embedded in the works, creating
discussion though juxtaposition. We hope that this event will provide
an opportunity for artists to share their works and ideas with the
concert-going community, for the visual arts community to experience
the music of a wide range of female composers, and for the artists
showing to generate further interest and awareness of their work.

For the event, we would like to show five to ten works. Works most
likely will take the form of paintings, drawings, prints, other
works-on-paper, photography, or small sculpture, although we are happy
to consider works in other media that can easily be installed in the
space for the evening. Artists will receive a $100 honorarium, as well
as 100% of any sales that result from the show. Works will be chosen
by a committee of professional curators and working artists.

Interested artists should send the following materials:
-Artist's resume
-Contact information
-Digital images or video documentation of the work(s) you would like to show
-Work list with title, date, dimensions, and description (if necessary)
-Artist's statement

Materials must be received by March 29th, and decisions will be sent
out by April 1st. Please email all of your materials except for images
to musiquealamode [at] gmail.com. Please send a hard copy of all materials
and a data CD with digital images to:

This performance is the third concert of the ensemble's debut "Musique at
the Bowery" season. The performance will feature the world premiere of
Margaret Anne Schedel's 'Albedo .12' for bass with gut strings and
amplifier.  Schedel, a prominent contemporary composer and cellist
specializing in the creation and performance of interactive media,
will share the stage with world-renowned composer Gabriela Lena Frank
(b. 1972), who will perform her Cuatro Canciones Andinas with the
ensemble, and with the baroque ensemble Callisto Ascending, who will
perform a cantata by Barbara Strozzi (1619-1677) with authentic
instruments. The concert also includes pieces by Pauline Viardot
(1821-1910), Rebecca Clarke (1886-1979), Libby Larsen (b. 1950) and
Shulamit Ran (b. 1949). Musique a la Mode aims to bring music to a
wide range of audiences, to keep classical music relevant to the
current era, and to give the composers of the day a venue and musical
palette for their new works.
