PORT AUTHORITY BUS TERMINAL SIDEWALK PLANTER ART DISPLAY

CALL FOR PROPOSALS

Due April 23, 2008

Planters outside the Port Authority of New York

Submit Proposal to:

209 West 38th Street, 2nd Fl.

New York, NY  10018

The Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan is one of the world?s busiest transportation terminals servicing some 200,000 visitors daily.  With the building slated for major renovations beginning in 2009, the Port Authority has agreed to allow interim arts uses to improve the aesthetic appeal of its façade along 8th Avenue and West 42nd Street.

The Fashion Center Business Improvement District and the Times Square Alliance, two not-for-profit neighborhood improvement associations in a collaborative effort, are looking for artists to design a concept for painting the collection of large sidewalk planters in front of the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

There are approximately 71 concrete planters, approximately 4 feet high by 6 feet wide by three feet deep, located along the sidewalks of the 8th Avenue main entrance of the north and south terminals (from 40th Street to 42nd Street) and along the 42nd Street side of the north terminal.

Design proposals should reflect the large scale and high visibility of this location.  The artwork, which must be painted in acrylic paint and clear-coated for durability, should be vibrant and innovative while mindful of the terminal?s importance as a gateway to New York City, welcoming visitors and celebrating the unique and iconic aspects of the City.

This proposal may be submitted in tandem with a proposal for a concurrent project for window art displays at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  However, all submissions will be reviewed independently.

The implementation of the artwork is anticipated to begin in May 2008.  Installation hours may be limited to evenings and other off-peak commuting times and other installation restrictions may be required.

How to Apply:

Please submit a one-page description of your project idea including a sketch or rendering of the proposed project; a proposed budget; an estimate of time required for installation; a resume with references; and documentation of your previous work (up to 10 images emailed as jpegs or on CD ? please include a SASE if required for return of any work).  If selected for additional consideration you will be notified by email.
