The Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan is one of the world?s busiest transportation terminals servicing some 200,000 visitors daily.  With the building slated for major renovations beginning in 2009, the Port Authority has agreed to allow interim arts uses to improve the aesthetic appeal of its façade along 8th Avenue and West 42nd Street.

The Fashion Center Business Improvement District and the Times Square Alliance, two not-for-profit neighborhood improvement associations in a collaborative effort, are looking for artists who will provide the large scale visual enhancement of the facility with window art.

The windows cover two sections of the front entrance north wing of the terminal.  The front windows are two panels high (of which there are 51: approximately 7 feet high by 6 feet wide).  The north wing of the terminal is located on 8th Avenue, and the proposed window displays will run from the corner of 41st street to the corner of 42nd street and extending along the 42nd Street exposure of the facility.

Design proposals should reflect the large scale and high visibility of this location.  The artwork, which must be painted or affixed to the interior of the windows (some limitations on materials will apply), should be mindful of the terminal?s importance as a gateway to New York City, welcoming visitors and celebrating the unique and iconic aspects of the City.

This proposal may be submitted in tandem with a proposal for a concurrent project for planter designs at the Port Authority Bus Terminal.  However, all submissions will be reviewed independently.

The installation of the artwork is anticipated to begin in May 2008.

How to Apply:

Please submit a one-page description of your project idea including a sketch or rendering of the proposed project; a proposed budget; an estimate of length of time required for installation; a resume with references; and documentation of your previous work (up to 10 images emailed as jpegs or on CD ? please include a SASE if required for return of any work).  If selected for additional consideration you will be notified by email.
