Site Specific Sundays: Unexpected dance performances at Waterside Plaza

Deadline: May 15th, 2008

About the Program
In 2006, chashama decided to expand its annual OASIS festival of modern dance to include off-site performances at the scenic Red Shade Plaza at Riverside Park South, as part of Summer on the Hudson at Riverside Park South.  This series was part of the Summer on the Hudson season of free cultural events in the park.

This year chashama moves Site Specific Sundays to a new location at Waterside Plaza, located between 25th and 29th Streets on the FDR drive by the East River.  Four companies or individual artists will be selected to create site-specific outdoor performance.  Each company or artist will be assigned one of the following three Sundays in July: 13, 20 and 27.  Performances will take place at 3PM and 5PM.  Please rank dates in order of preference, indicating which, if any, you are unable to perform.

Performances should be created specific to this location for an audience comprised of a diverse age-group.  We strongly advise that you visit the park before submitting an application.  We encourage you to devise a theme for your work based on the geography of the area or something more abstract, as long as the piece you propose was made to be performed at Waterside Plaza and not somewhere else.  Pieces should be no shorter than 20 minutes and no longer than 60 minutes.

chashama will offer each group/individual artist a stipend, assistance with press and promotional materials and free rehearsal space at Waterside Plaza.

About Waterside Plaza
Waterside Plaza is a residential complex on Manhattan?s east side.  Within this residential complex is a beautiful outdoor theater where the performances will take place, allowing for a built-in audience of the residents of Waterside Plaza ? in addition to other attendees.  Cement and wooden surfaces will be available for performance.  The space is accessible easily on foot, by car and train.  Power and a sound system will be available, and groups will have the option to rehearse outside at the space.

About chashama
chashama is a not-for-profit artist services organization that provides free and subsidized space to visual and performing artists. chashama finds and ?adopts? unused properties in New York City. This real estate is loaned to us by owners and developers and quickly transformed into workspace and unusual performance sites for artists. chashama manages these interim arts complexes and through this process is able to offer fully and highly subsidized space, giving emerging and mid-career artists more opportunities to present innovative work.

Timeline & Conditions
chashama is offering performance space at Waterside Plaza for three (3) emerging dance companies/choreographers to present original works 20 ? 60 minutes in length.  Groups/artists will be assigned one (1) Sunday in July (July 13, 20, and 27) with performances to take place at 3PM and 5PM.

Interested groups/artists may contact Risa Shoup via email at risa [at] chashama.org in order to arrange a visit to the park.  Check our website ? photos of the site coming soon!
