SINGERS: Please be prepared with a contemporary / R&B / Afrobeat song which shows off your voice and range. Bring sheet music. An accompanist will be provided. Please bring a current picture and resume, stapled together. PERCUSSIONISTS: Please bring your instrument with you and be prepared to play.
Place: Nola Studios, 250 West 54th St. 11th Fl.
SEEKING:FELA: (African, African-American or of African descent; Age Late 20's - Early 40's). FELA KUTI, the inventor of Afrobeat Music; Political Activist and insurgent against the unjust government of Nigeria; Declared Himself "The Black President" of Africa; Compelling with a wild energy; Commanding; Not necessarily physically beautiful, but physically fit – comfortable walking around in his underwear; occasionally jumps up on tables; Might have an unexpected impassioned outburst at another band member; Takes Power; Beginning with his love of music, when he is introduced to more in his life, he embraces it and begins a political journey; Loves both Life and Disruption; He married all 27 of his female singers & dancers in one ceremony & kept them all; ACTOR MUST SING CONTEMPORARY OR AFROBEAT MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION, BE ABLE TO MOVE VERY WELL, AND ACT TO CARRY BOOK SCENES; Playing Musical instruments is NOT necessary, but would be welcome, but FAMILIARITY WITH AFROBEAT MUSIC IS A MUST.
FEMALE SINGER: (African, African-American or of African decent Age 40's - 50's). Plays Fela's Mother, a stern rigid strict Christian; revelers; compatriots; and possibly even Fela himself; A profound and compelling presence; Must be versatile enough to play ages 29 thru 52; SINGER MUST BE VERSATILE AND SING CONTEMPORARY OR AFROBEAT MUSIC WITH GREAT PASSION and BE ABLE TO MOVE WELL. SINGING ROLE ONLY (No acting lines). BE FAMILIAR WITH AFROBEAT MUSIC.
MALE PERCUSSIONISTS: (African, African-American or of African descent, Youthful - Middle Aged, Physically active) Please bring your instrument with you and be prepared to play.
This NON-AEA Developmental Workshop will take place between Mon June 16th thru Sun July 20th and require availability 10am – 6pm, 6 days per week for 4-5 weeks with possible evenings the last week.
